NEWS CLOSE SEASON
European
Competition Draws
THE balls are out of the bag in terms of European competion
with the three Welsh clubs enjoying mixed fortunes.
Champions league representatives TNS face a double header
against Latvian side Ventspils. They lie in mid table after
around a dozen games played in Latvia with the likes of
Skonto FC and Riga FC above them. Dinaburg are a couple
of places lower than the Balitc Sea side whose City boasts
a population of 43,000. The first leg will be "at home"
at Latham Park, Newtown on 17/18 July 2007.
In the UEFA Cup there are tough draws for Rhyl and Carmarthen.
The Lilywhites meet former Bangor opponents FC Haka of Finland
whilst Carmarthen face SK Brann of Norway. Rhyl travel first
on Thursday 19th July whilst Brann will be in West Wales

PIXIE
JOINS BARTON AT CAERSWS
Former Buckley boss Dave Taylor will be part of a new management
team at Caersws.
NEW Caersws manager Mike Barton is to be joined at the Recreation
Ground by Dave Taylor, who managed Buckley Town until the
end of last season.
Like former goalkeeper Barton, 'Pixie' Taylor was a highly
experienced Welsh Premier player, but at the other end of
the field as a striker with Conwy United, Porthmadog, Inter
Cardiff, Newtown, Holywell Town, Welshpool, Flexsys Cefn
Druids and Oswestry Town.
In all, he scored 117 goals from 163 appearances and, in
1993/4, hit 43 goals from 38 games for Porthmadog to put
him top of the European goal charts.
After leaving Oswestry in 2000, Taylor continued as a player
in the Cymru Alliance and steered Buckley to their first-ever
title in 2004/5, before stepping down this year.
Taylor almost quit the Bucks in 2006 when the club declined
promotion to the Welsh Premier for financial reasons. He
was persuaded to stay on, but says: "When you get the
opportunity to go up, sometimes you’ve just got to
take it even if it means coming straight back down because
the opportunity may not arise again for a period of time.
"I understand the reasons why they didn’t want
to go up, but part of me has continued to think what might
have happened had we given it a try.
The Bluebirds appointed Barton this weekend and the new
duo face a major task to revive fortunes at the mid-Wales
outfit, who have already lost central defender Hugh Clarke
to Newtown and young midfielder Chris Venables to Welshpool.

FORMER DRUIDS' TRIO SIGN FOR PARK
Former Druid Burns will captain Gap Queens Park.
A TRIO of former NEWI Cefn Druids players are among a strong
squad assembled by ambitious Cymru Alliance outfit Gap Queens
Park, who are now owned by recruitment company Gap.
Defender Michael Burns, who has been named as captain, and
midfielder Metcalf both signed for Druids from St Helens
Town last November.
Colin Quirk moved to Airbus from Caernarfon Town in December
2004. He linked-up with the Ancients last September, but
was released a month later to join Runcorn Linnets.
Also prominent amongst the club's signings are November's
Cymru Alliance player of the month Phil Jones from Gresford
Athletic and the return of Queensway favourite Jon Halton
after a season at Mynydd Isa.

AIRBUS WANT NAME CHANGE
AIRBUS
UK have asked the Welsh Premier for a name change to Airbus
UK Broughton.
The club aims to increase its fan base by identifying with
the location of the ground, adjacent to the Airbus wing
making plant in Broughton, near Chester.
The Wingmakers have used several names over the years, including
Vickers-Armstrong, de Havilands, Hawker Siddeley, British
Aerospace and Bae Systems.

REDS FINED FOR SPITTING INCIDENT
LLANELLI
have been fined £500 plus £50 costs after a
supporter spat at referee Mark Whitby following the Reds'
Welsh Cup semi-final defeat to Carmarthen Town at Havefordwest
County's New Bridge Meadow.
The club has also been severely warned by the FA of Wales
about the future conduct of its supporters and has been
instructed to to place warning notices around the ground
reminding supporters of their responsibilities with regards
to their behaviour at matches.
Meanwhile, Cymru Alliance outfit Queens Park have been fined
£1,000, with £500 suspended, after being found
guilty on a racial abuse charge.
The FAW said the club was minimally responsible for the
actions of Craig Edwards, who was sent-off in a game against
Llandudno at the Queensway Stadium last December.
The new Gap Queens Park club say they are "working
towards charter status from the Kick racism out of Football
Campaign".

CYMRU ALLAINCE LAW CHANGES
Next season the following Law Changes will be enforced by
matchday officials
Firstly, Any player wearing a long sleeved undershirt under
a short sleeved playing shirt must ensure that the undershirt
is of the same main colour as the sleeve of the playing
shirt, also players are reminded that if undershorts are
worn then they must be of the same colour as the playing
shorts.
Secondly, and this will cause the most problems, the IFAB
have rewritten their instructions and guidelines on jewellery
as follows: All items of jewellery (necklaces, rings, bracelets,
earrings, leather bands, rubber bands etc.) are strictly
forbidden and must be removed. Using tape to cover jewellery
is not acceptable
with
kind permission of http://www.welsh-premier.com
By the start of the new season BALA TOWN will have
built new seated spectator stands to accommodate 364 people.
There will also be a 30 metre long covered stand behind
one goal for standing spectators. There will be a 1.85 metre
wide tarmacced hardstanding all around the ground and admission
to the ground will now be via 2 new turnstile entrances.
The club consider that their facilities now conform to League
of Wales criteria and are hugely grateful to the Grounds
Committee whose voluntary work has enabled this development
to take place.
FREAK ACCIDENT FOR EX-BANGOR STAR
FORMER
Bangor City centre half Alan Walker is to undergo major
surgery after a freak accident left him partially paralysed
with a broken neck.
Doctors told Walker, who captained Telford United to victory
in the FA Trophy in 1983, that the problem was caused by
a genetic weakness and could have happened at any time.
The 47-year-old, who played for Bangor from 1979 to 1981
and is now joint manager of Maidstone United, damaged his
spinal cord after jumping while on a coaching course in
Belfast.

NOMADS SIGN EX-WREXHAM KEEPER
NEW
Connah's Quay manager Jim Hackett has moved quickly to replace
goalkeeper Paul Smith, who has followed former boss Neville
Powell to Bangor City.
Nomads have signed former Wrexham trainee Daniel Evans,
a 22-year-old who was placed on standby for the Wales Under-19
squad in 2004.
Evans has previously appeared in the Welsh Premier for Bangor
City, making five appearances in 2003/4 on loan from The
Racecourse to deputise for Phil Priestley.

NOMADS HAPPY TO REBUILD SQUAD
Striker Tommy Mutton was unable to attend Hackett's first
meeting.
NEW Connah's Quay manager Jim Hackett is preparing to rebuild
his squad after a lukewarm response from the remaining players
on Deeside.
Captain Marc Limbert and keeper Paul Smith have already
followed former boss Nev Powell down the A55 to Bangor City,
with Craig Garside signing for Rhyl and likely to be followed
by Phil Molyneaux.
Powell is expected to return for one or two more to bolster
his Bangor side and, with no commitment to re-sign from
any of the existing players, Hackett is using his contacts
to build a squad capable of challenging in the Welsh Premier
next season.
A first meeting with the remaining Nomads last week saw
forwards Tommy Mutton and Stuart Cooke unable to attend
for work reasons, Danny Jellicoe and Chris Melia on holiday
and both Adam Dickenson and Dave Swanick on their way to
Australia seeking trials. Chris Sergeant also didn't show
up.
Hackett says he has certainly not closed the door on any
of the existing squad signing but is confident he can find
players good enough to replace them and compete in the league
next season.
He has already signed ex-Wrexham youth keeper Dan Evans
and also has two young ex-Chester midfielder's lined-up,
along with two defenders and two strikers, all with Welsh
Premier experience, but has refused to name them at this
stage in case the deals go sour.

BOWES REJECTS PREMIER MOVE
Bowes is to remain at Bastion Road.
PROLIFIC Cymru Alliance marksman Steve Bowes has resisted
overtures from Welsh Premier clubs to remain with Prestatyn
next season.
A former West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest youth,
Bowes netted 53 times for the Bastion Road outfit last season
and hit the headlines by scoring a league record seven goals
for Prestatyn against Queens Park.
He was promptly signed on second forms by then Bangor City
manager Steve Bleasdale, later also registering with Caernarfon
Town, but failed to appear for either side.
However, Bowes has now assured Prestatyn officials he will
be staying.
"Steve has informed our new manager Neil Gibson that
he will be signing for us for next season, which is terrific
news for everyone at the club,” said chairman Tony
Thackeray.

HULSE RAIDS BLOODS FOR RUFFER
Carl Ruffer, former Chester City midfielder.
RHYL manager John Hulse has signed former Everton junior
and Chester City defender/midfielder Carl Ruffer.
The highly experienced 32-year-old has joined the Lilywhites
from Conference North champions Droylsden, where he was
a team-mate of Rhyl striker Dave Cameron, and follows Hulse's
capture of striker Calvin Davies from Welshpool last week.
Ruffer signed professional forms at Goodison Park, later
moving to Runcorn where he spent several seasons before
joining Chester City in 2000.
He was part of the City side that won the Conference in
2003/4 and the following season signed for Morecambe, moving
to the Bloods in November 2005, where he captained the side
to title last season.
Ruffer was voted Fans Player of the Year at Droylsden and
Conference North Player of the Year.
"Carl is an inspirational player and a tremendous acquisition,"
Hulse told www.lilywhites.northwalesblogs.co.uk
"Hopefully this will show the fans how determined I
am to bring quality players to Rhyl."
Hulse revealed another top player from the English non-league
pyramid system could sign for Rhyl at the weekend, and negotiations
are ongoing to capture a top Welsh Premier performer this
week.

THREE RECRUITS FOR NOMADS
Jim
Hackett is bringing in three more potential recruits [Flintshire
Chronicle].
BEFORE jetting-off to Spain for a holiday, new Connah's
Quay manager Jim Hackett lined-up three new faces to attend
pre-season on Deeside, with a view to signing for the Nomads.
Best-known of the trio is striker Stewart White, a former
Wales Schoolboys Under-18, who represented the Welsh Colleges
Under-19s and also played for the League of Wales Under-19s.
White had trials with Wrexham, Oldham and Morecambe, and
made 15 substitute appearances for Rhyl in seasons 2002/3
and 2003/4 without ever being selected for a full start.
After signing for Airbus in February 2006, where he made
seven Welsh Premier appearances, he spent some time in Rhyl's
Reserves, signing for Steve Bleasdale at Bangor City in
February and appearing five times from the bench.
Hackett's other triallists are left-footed central midfielder
and former Rochdale junior Nicky Taylor and Wayne Morgan,
who was released by Chester at the end of last season, and
can operate either as a fullback or in midfield.

DENBIGH MARKSMAN FLIES TO ROBINS
Williams Cooke scored 26 goals for Denbigh Town last season.
RICHARD Williams Cooke scored twice for Denbigh Town against
Newtown in last season's Welsh Cup and has now been offered
the chance to boost the Robins' Welsh Premier firepower
by manager Darren Ryan.
Highly influential in Denbigh's double-winning campaign
which sees them promoted to the Cymru Alliance for next
season, Williams Cooke was the club's top scorer with 26
goals.
"I personally feel that I have played really well so
no doubt that has helped me attract the interest,"
he says.
"I have always wanted to play in the Welsh Premier
League and am really impressed with the set-up and the way
manager Darren Ryan talked about his plans."
Williams Cooke spent a year at Everton's Centre of Excellence
and also had a trial at Burnley, before playing with Ruthin
Town, Colwyn Bay YMCA, Trefnant Village, Lex XI and Chirk
AAA.
He is the latest in a stream of Denbigh players who now
ply their trade in the Welsh Premier, including new Rhyl
striker Calvin Davies, Connah's Quay duo Tommy Mutton and
Danny Jellicoe, Welshpool's Craig Wilkinson and Ceri James,
and NEWI Cefn Druids' wingman Osian Jones.

BANGOR'S RACE AGAINST TIME
Fire damage at Bangor's Farrar Road stadium [Tomos Lewis].
BANGOR City face a race against time to have their fire-damaged
Farrar Road ground ready for the new season.
Part of the main stand at the Council-owned stadium was
destroyed last month and Bangor town clerk Gwyn Hughes has
raised fears that repairs and rebuilding will take longer
than anticipated.
"As far as the insurance is concerned we've had the
structural engineering report and are waiting for three
quotes from demolition contractors," he told a Council
meeting this week.
"It's an extremely complicated demolition, there's
no support for anybody to go on top of the roof and it's
liable to collapse.
"Surveys for asbestos and other materials also need
to be done, health and safety is a massive issue on something
like this."
Asked by Councillor and City fan Bryn Hughes if the ground
would be ready for the start of the season in August, Hughes
added: "You can't guarantee anything with the building
industry, once we get them it will take just a few weeks,
but it's getting them that's the problem."
Repairs will be mainly cosmetic as the Citizens hope to
move to a new stadium at Nantporth for 2008/9. If Farrar
Road is unavailable, City could be forced to reverse early
home fixtures to opponents' grounds or ground-share, possibly
at Morfa Conwy.

LEAGUE TO PROBE PLAY-OFF PLAN
A place in the Uefa InterToto Cup would be up for grabs
via a play-off proposal.
AN INCREASE in prize money for the winners of next season’s
Welsh Premier League, a new format for the League Cup, and
an investigation into the introduction of a play-off system
for European entry were among the chief items to come out
of yesterday’s AGM at Llandudno.
And the league could have a financial partner to marry up
with the Principality Building Society, a situation which
could be confirmed in the next week or so.
Member clubs were told that the cash paid to the champions
at the end of the next campaign would go up to £15,000,
falling in line with the amount received by the winners
of the Loosemores League Cup, which will have a new format
next season.
Clubs will be organised into six groups of three, with the
top six going forward into the quarter-finals with the two
best runners-up.
Club officials also heard that the league's board of directors
are to investigate the possibility of a play-off system
being introduced to decide the Welsh InterToto Cup entrant.
Currently the WPL’s third-placed side plays in Europe's
third-most important competition.
The meeting also rubber-stamped the promotions of Welsh
League winners Neath Athletic and Cymru Alliance champions
Llangefni while voting results were also given for board
membership.
Port Talbot Town chairman Andrew Edwards was returned unopposed
to replace Carmarthen Town counterpart Jeff Thomas, who
has stood down as South Wales representative.
Mid Wales representative Garth Williams, formerly of Caersws,
has also stood down and will be replaced by Aberystwyth
Town’s Tony Bates while a secret ballot was used to
earn Phil Jones, of Porthmadog, the North Wales seat from
previous incumbent Gwyn Pierce Owen, the Bangor City president.
At the annual dinner, The New Saints' boss Ken McKenna received
the manager of the season award, with the Golden Boot for
the highest scorer going to Llanelli's Rhys Griffiths for
the second consecutive year.

hopes that they can follow the example set by TNS who won
the Cymru Alliance in 1993 and have gone on to be the top

Mickey Evans Steps
Down.......
Long serving Caersws manager Mickey Evans has stepped down.
He leaves The Bluebirds after last season's League Cup triumph.
Or does he! The resignation story is the headline on the
official welsh premier website. However the well established,
and to be fair, well respected unofficial site carries a
denial from the former Wrexham defender, suggesting that
a forthcoming meeting will decide his fate! Watch this space!
Wayne Phillips is The
Archdruid.......
There is wider agreement that Wayne Phillips is the new
boss at Cefn Druids. assisted by Lee Jones.
Phillips has experience as manager at Caernarfon Town where
his reign ended last season, ironically with former Druids
boss Steve O'Shaughnessy saving the Canaries from relegation
with a late revival. How the former Wrexham pair will fare
at Plaskanaston remains to be seen, but local rumours that
Dave Taylor was "lined up" for the job seem wide
of the mark! Much is he isn`t he with Dave Taylor at the
moment he has had his name linked to a few clubs.
SILVER LINING FOR DRUIDS
Druids hope to leave their
Plas Kynaston home within two years.
RECENT financial problems at NEWI Cefn Druids could soon
be a distant memory as the club revealed plans to relocate.
After being unable to pay players for several weeks towards
the end of last season, chairman Brian Mackie has confirmed
that the Ancients' white knight is a firm of developers
who want to develop the existing ground at Plas Kynaston
Lane.
Subject to successful negotiations and planning permission,
Druids would move to a new £2 million stadium just
a mile away in Rhosymedre. The ground would be Uefa-compliant,
ensuring that the club can retain its membership of the
Welsh Premier when stricter licensing criteria come into
force in season 2009/10.
Plans also include a new and larger social club, which is
essential to future financial security, and a new lease
which would have a minimum term as least as long as the
existing one in Cefn Mawr. In any event, Mackie says the
Druids' off the field outlook "is looking very bright"
after the accounts showed considerable progress in reducing
inherited debt.
The site of former railway sidings, Plas Kynaston Lane was
the home of Druids United from the late 1950s and has been
used since the merger with Cefn Albion in 1992 and Druids'
subsequent elevation to the top flight.

SMITH FOLLOWS NEV TO
BANGOR
Paul Smith, ever-present during
Rhyl's treble winning season of 2003/4.
GOALKEEPER Paul Smith is the first player confirmed to have
followed former Connah's Quay manager Neville Powell down
the North Wales coast to Bangor City. Smith started his
career as a youth with the Nomads and was initially signed
as cover by Rhyl in January 2002 before service at TNS,
Flint Town United and Colwyn Bay.
He returned to Belle Vue as first-choice for t he treble-winning
season, but fell out of favour in 2004/5 and returned to
Deeside in the summer of 2005. One of the most experienced
stoppers in the league, he has clocked-up 188 Welsh Premier
appearances over 10 seasons.

QUEENS PARK BRIDGE
THE GAP
A new name and new logo for
Gap Queens Park.
REPRIEVED from relegation because there was only one applicant
for promotion, Cymru Alliance outfit Queens Park have unveiled
ambitious plans for the future. Specialist recruitment provider
Gap Personnel, who are already a sponsor at Wrexham, have
come in to rescue the club that came close to folding after
finishing the season with just 10 points. Gary Dewhurst,
who heads-up what is one of the UK's largest independent
agencies with offices nationwide, is the new chairman and
benefactor of the club that plays at Wrexham's Queensway
Stadium. He has high hopes that they can follow the example
set by TNS who won the Cymru Alliance in 1993 and have gone
on to become the leading club in Welsh football, playing
in Europe year on year. The club will now be known as Gap
Queens Park and will play in the company colours of all
white with maroon and navy blue. Stewart Roberts, who was
involved previously with NEWI Cefn Druids, will lead the
club as general manager. with qualified coach Levi Lloyd
as football manager. Secretary Trevor Green has held similar
positions with clubs in the English
system and Ruthin Town. "We have identified 20 of the
area's finest non league players as targets and are in negotiations
at present to bring in a well known former Wrexham
and Chester City favourite to the club as player coach,"
says a statement from Queens Park, who say they aim to establish
themselves as the town's second club and gain promotion
to the Welsh Premier.

MANAGER EVANS DENIES QUIT REPORT
Mickey Evans says his future at Caersws is still undecided.
MICKEY Evans has denied that he has already resigned as
manager of Caersws, but his future will become clearer after
a meeting with club officials scheduled for Tuesday night.
The longest-serving manager in the Welsh Premier, Evans
traditionally meets annually with the club's committee to
discuss plans for the coming campaign, and both he and club
officials are surprised that the Welsh Premier League's
official website is carrying a story that claims he has
already "stepped down".
With cash tight and the Bluebirds' future uncertain, he
may feel that now is the time to go, "but nothing has
been decided yet," he emphasised this afternoon.
Caersws born and bred, Evans has held the reins at the Recreation
Ground for 18 consecutive seasons and is the only one of
the current managers to have been in the dugout when the
League of Wales kicked-off in 1992. His achievements include
three League Cup wins, most recently a penalty shoot-out
success against Rhyl at the end of last season.

FARRAR ROAD STAND HIT BY FIRE
The main stand at Bangor City's Farrar Road was damaged
by a fire which struck in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Emergency services were called to the blaze shortly after
midnight and managed to restrict the damage to an area above
the main players' entrance. An electrical fault in the PA
system is though to have caused the outbreak with the worst
affected areas said to be the commentary box and the directors'
seating area. The club says a more detailed assessment of
the damage will take place during the week. 19 May 2007
JIWS TO MANAGE CONNAH'S QUAY LLOYD WILLIAMS:
The Welsh Premier's all-time record goal scorer. Lloyd Williams
career details Welsh Premier legends: Marc Lloyd Williams
THE Welsh Premier's record goalscorer, Marc Lloyd Williams,
will be named as the new manager of Connah's Quay.
After Neville Powell departed to take up the reins at Bangor,
his assistant, Alun Morgan, last week declined an offer
to step-up into the role and followed his former boss to
Farrar Road. The Nomads' board has now turned to Lloyd Williams,
who was released by ex-Bangor boss Steve Bleasdale at the
end of the season. Known as Jiws, Lloyd Williams signed
for TNS in season 2004/5 after scoring 176 Welsh Premier
goals for Porthmadog, Bangor (where he won a championship
medal) and Aberystwyth. He had moved from Bangor to the
Football League with Stockport County, Halifax and York
City, but returned to the Citizens to break the league goal-scoring
record with 47 in 2001/2 and would have won the European
Golden Boot award had Wales enjoyed a higher Uefa coefficient.
A Wales 'B' and semi-professional international, he became
the first to score 200 Welsh Premier goals at Caernarfon
in January 2005, also breaking the TNS club scoring record
and again winning the league's Golden Boot award with 34
goals.
In his third spell back at Bangor last season following
his releas by TNS he added another 19 goals. It is not known
whether Lloyd Williams will continue to play - he has 255
league goals from 324 starts - but this will be a first
crack at management for the 34-year-old, who is currently
taking his Uefa 'A' Licence qualification. His first task
will be to stabilise the successful squad at the Deeside
Stadium, with several players already being targeted by
other clubs during a period of uncertainty. 22 May 2007

PROMOTED CLUBS PLAY FINAL GAMES
WELSH Premier-bound Neath Athletic brought the curtain down
on their successful season by lifting the Tony Nakonecznyj
West Wales Senior Cup on Wednesday night, writes Owain Johns.
The Welsh League champions defeated Second Division neighbours
Garden Village 2-1, at a rain-swepped Llandarcy Park, but
were made to work hard for their victory.
An impressive first-half performance saw the visitors take
the lead through Lee Rastatter shortly before the break,
but it was the same player who put through his own net on
76 minutes to level the scoreline. Neath now had the momentum
and in the very last minute were awarded a penalty which
was converted by Jarrod Price.
Meanwhile, champions Llangefni Town bade farewell to the
Cymru Alliance with a 1-1 home draw against Anglesey rivals
Holyhead Hotspur. Ironically, the match postponed a fortnight
ago because the pitch was too hard almost failed to take
place again on a rainsoaked surface that was
marginally passed fit to play. Llangefni's 16-match unbeaten
run looked under threat when Curt
Williams put Spurs ahead after 56 minutes, but Town levelled
through a Lee Dixon header eight minutes from time.
Queens Pride Intact...
A playing record which yielded just ten points from 34 games
guaranteed Queens Park relegation back to the Welsh National
League. 134 goals conceded against just 40 scored. Points
deducted along the way for turning up to a fixture short
of numbers.
So why the mention here?
Given these circumstances many clubs would have folded and
withdrawn from the league weeks ago. Not so Queens Park
who fulfilled their fixtures, took some fearful beatings,
but brought their curtain down yesterday with a five all
draw with Penrhyncoch. A lot of credit is due to those determined
invididuals who made sure the Wrexham side did not fold,
well done.
Prestatyn Floored By Fuller Loss
Free scoring Prestatyn have been hit by the resignation
of manager Dave Fuller.
The former Bangor City and Southport favourite has cited
work and family commitments as his reason and has left the
club with immediate effect. He had fashioned a side who
scored more than 100 goals this season, assisted by a bumper
haul of 50 plus from top scorer Steve Bowes.
Fuller was a popular and versatile member of the Bangor
side along with new blues boss Nev Powell and other favourites
Derek Goulding and Kevin Mooney. His loss leaves Prestatyn
with a major headache as they enter the so called off season!

COAST CUP SOLACE FOR SILKMEN
FLINT Town United gained
some consolation for missing out on promotion to the Welsh
Premier when they lifted the North Wales Coast FA's Challenge
Cup at rain-swept Colwyn Bay.
A goal by Jay Forlan four minutes into the second half was
enough for the Silkmen to win the trophy for the first time
in 17 years at the expense of Prestatyn, who had beaten Rhyl
on the way to the final. The only goal of the game came when
Forlon rolled a rebound past three
Prestatyn defenders and into the net from 22 yards out and
Prestatyn were unlucky when a fierce drive from Ian Griffiths
hit a post with 10 minutes to go. Bala Town won the North
East Wales Challenge Cup, coming from behind to beat Gresford
Athletic 2-1.
GREEN LIGHT FOR PROMOTION DUO
The main stand at Llangefni's
Talwrn Road ground.
THE Welsh Premier will return to a full complement of 18 clubs
next season after promoted duo Llangefni Town and Neath Athletic
both passed final ground inspections last week.
Subject to confirmation when the league clubs meet in Llandudno
next month, both will enter the top flight for the first time
in their history, with Cwmbran Town relegated to the Welsh
League.
Neath finished runners-up in 2005/6 - their
first season following the merger of Neath and Skewen Athletic
- but their promotion application was dramatically thrown
out by the clubs on the recommendation of the league's board,
which was not satisfied that the South Wales outfit met all
the criteria.
Twelve months on they have been able to make the necessary
improvements to their Llandarcy Park home and now make the
step-up as runaway champions, with a league record 92 points.
Champions Llangefni have spent eight seasons in the Cymru
Alliance, finishing as runners-up in 2000/1 and 2001/2, on
the second occasion as the failed merger club Llangefni Glantraeth.
Managed by former Caernarfon Town and Colwyn Bay boss Adie
Jones, the Anglesey outfit came with a late run to pip Bala
Town to the title.
POWELL LEAVES NOMADS
FOR CITY JOB
Only Mickey Evans (Caersws) has managed one club longer than
Powell's 14-year reign at the Nomads.
BANGOR City have appointed former player and Connah's Quay
boss Nev Powell to be their 14th manager since the birth of
the Welsh Premier in 1992, succeeding Steve Bleasdale, who
quit at the end of the season after just six months at the
Farrar Road helm. Announcing the appointment, City chairman
Ken Jones said "There is no doubt that Neville is the
right man for the job. He has taken Connah's Quay to the brink
of Europe despite financial constraints, he has an undoubted
commitment to, and knowledge of, the Welsh Premier League,
and
importantly has historic roots with Bangor City FC, who have
always held him in high esteem."
Powell took charge of the Nomads at the end of the first season
of League of Wales football in May 1993 along with joint player-manager
Phil Evans and has been with the Deeside club ever since.
At the end of the 1994/95 campaign he was left to go it alone
and, within 12 months, collected his first piece of silverware
when the Westenders won the League Cup, beating Ebbw Vale
1-0 in the 1996 final at Caersws.
That proved to be his penultimate game as a player for, in
the very first match of the following season, he broke a leg
at Llansantffraid, which curtailed his playing career.
Powell made his Football League debut as a 17-year old on
St David's Day 1981 when he scored for Tranmere Rovers away
at Torquay. A skilful and hard-working midfielder, he made
86 League appearances for the Prenton Park club between 1981
and 1984, scoring four times.
He moved on to play for Bangor in the Northern Premier League
and quickly found himself part of the Citizens' team that
qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985, playing
in all four games against Fredrikstad and Atletico Madrid.
After making more than 30 League of Wales appearances for
City, he moved to the Nomads and played in 115 league and
cup games before the injury. He has twice led the club to
the brink of European competition, finishing fifth last season.
Powell's first task will be to stabilise a
squad from which Bleasdale had already released several players,
including last season's top scorer Marc Lloyd Williams, the
league's all-time leading marksman.
Of the men appointed to the Bangor hotseat, only Nigel Adkins
(now in charge at Scunthorpe United), Meirion Appleton and
Peter Davenport have lasted more than 12 months in the job.
Liverpool-based Bleasdale cited travel problems, lack of financial
resources and an inability to attract English-based players
as his main reasons for leaving the Citizens.
"The last two managerial appointments have, on reflection,
been mistaken," added chairman Jones. "Clayton Blackmore,
although a good player and servant to the club over many years,
had no managerial experience, and this quickly revealed itself
in the club's dismal performances under his leadership.
"Steve Bleasdale, whilst bringing in professionalism
sorely needed after Blackmore's reign, could not adopt to
the WPL system." Powell will bring assistant Alan Morgan
with him to Farrar Road.
MORGAN PONDERS NOMADS'
OFFER
ALAN Morgan has been offered the manager's job at Connah's
Quay, vacated after 14 years by Neville Powell last week to
join Bangor City. Former NEWI Cefn Druids' boss Morgan has
asked for time to consider the position and has promised the
Deeside outfit a decision by
Wednesday morning. Morgan, who made 70 Football League appearances
for Tranmere Rovers, has been Powell's assistant at the Nomads
since last July. Club secretary Bobby Hunter says: "The
club are seeking an early resolution to this matter, as it
is known that some of the Nomads' players are awaiting the
outcome of Alan's decision, before making decisions about
their own futures."
Morgan has also had an offer to follow Powell to Farrar Road,
but Quay have agreed to wait until Wednesday before considering
what they say are "potentially high quality applications."
After a loan spell at Altrincham during the 1996/97 season,
Morgan switched to then Conference outfit Doncaster Rovers
in July 2002. A transfer to Morecambe in December 2002 was
followed by his move into the Welsh Premier, with Porthmadog,
the following summer and his 42 league appearances include
a short stay at Rhyl.
Whatever the outcome of his decision, Connah's Quay appear
likely to face competition for the services of several players,
including keeper Paul Smith and central defender Chris Williams.
PORT QUINTET IN ISLAND
PARTY
Osian Roberts again leads Anglesey to the Island Games. FIVE
players from Porthmadog have been selected to represent Anglesey
in the 12th Island Games, which will be held in Rhodes from
30 June to 6 July.
Rhys Roberts, Richard Hughes, Danny Hughes, Gareth Parry and
Aled Rowlands are joined by Caernarfon Town goalkeeper Paul
Pritchard and Bangor City's Mel McGuiness in a squad managed
by former Port boss Osian Roberts.
"It's a new era really since only eight of the squad
have been to the Games before," says Roberts, shortly
to take up a new role as the FAW's technical director.
"People will obviously ask why wasn't 'so and so' selected,
but quite a few were unable to commit to the 10 days. These
lads are to be congratulated for their willingness to miss
work, lose out financially some of them, to go and represent
Ynys Môn in the World Island Games.
"I think we've got a good chance of doing well, although
it will be difficult in the heat and humidity of Rhodes,"
he added. Ben Heald and Chris Williams (Llanfair PG), Gerallt
Jones, Mike
Davies, Curt Williams, Tom Edwards (all Holyhead Hotspur),
Gareth Owen, Emyr Rowlands, Darren Jones (all Glantraeth),
and Gafyn Lloyd Jones (Bodedern) complete the travelling party.
HULSE SIGNS NOMADS' MIDFIELDER
RHYL manager John Hulse has made his second
close-season capture with the signing of Connah's Quay midfielder
Craig Garside. After brief spells with Bangor and Colwyn Bay,
Garside joined Caernarfon Town in March 2005 before spending
the whole of last season with
Nomads.
As a trainee, he was a team-mate of Wayne Rooney at Everton
and played alongside the England striker in the 2002 FA Youth
Cup final. Garside has also captained Wales at U15, U16 and
U19 level. Last week, Hulse added Aberystwyth Town winger
Craig Jones to his squad. |
