| Newly promoted and
unsure as to what to expect as this was the highest league the club
had ever competed in, we got off to a flyer against the fancied
and eventual league winners Castell A.C.
Manager at the time was Colin Snead with Assistant Greg Moffatt
and the early part of the season saw us right up there with the
best, if my memory serves me right and anyone reading correct me
if I am wrong Colin Snead resigned after our home win to Borras
Park in the Cup and Greg Moffatt was installed as Manager as a natural
move. We had a great chance of winning the title this particular
season but our closing games were poor to say the least winning
only three out of the last ten was hardly good enough.
The club at this time could not have progressed much the same as
Castell A.C. due to the standard of the ground, which is a great
shame for this particular league as it makes the sides a breading
ground for Cymru Alliance sides to cherry pick, a very frustrating
thing when you are trying to build a football club.
A few of these players moved on to Cymru Alliance before Christmas
of the next season and the quality of this side was up to this time
the best we had put together.
Players such as Steven McGowan, Lee Collins, Richard Dermott, Owain
Roberts, Lee Shearsmith, Rob Williams, Johnny Lea all put themselves
in the shop window this particular season.
Quality player of the side was Darryl Williams who played virtually
his last full season here before going into the veteran league,
what you would have given for a younger Darryl Williams 100% committed
and just as talented, he made goals for lesser players and made
the ordinary partner upfront look special.
Another for mention was Richard Shone his knee’s had gone
and playing with strapping was for me the best centre half we had
seen here at this time, along side Lee Collins they were a great
partnership.
The saving grace of the season was winning the Divisional Cup in
a thriller against the then crowned League Champions Castell A.C.
who I must say had a fine side and it was a great shame that team
due to ground and I guess finances was unable to take their chance
in the Cymru Alliance as they would have done themselves proud.
Gez Porter the best keeper for a penalty I have seen in local football
won us the cup saving three.
Another quality side that season for me was Penycae again always
chasing honours, they had to be the best side not to have progressed
from this league over the years.
